Kyle Kendrick pitched beautifully in relief of Pedro Martinez, giving the Phillies three strong innings at a crucial time in the game. Kendrick allowed just two hits, did not give up a run, and he had four strikeouts with no walks in his appearance. The Phillies offense meanwhile continued to pad their 5-3 lead throughout the game. Thanks to back-to-back triples by Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino in the 5th inning, along with a Raul Ibanez sacrifice fly, the Phillies added two more runs to take a 7-3 advantage. The Phils then added three more runs between the 6th and 7th innings, which were highlighted by an upper deck two run homerun by Raul Ibanez, which gave him his 34th homerun of the season, a new career high for him.

The rest of the bullpen did a great job in the game too. Chad Durbin pitched a hitless eighth inning, and Scott Eyre took care of the first two batters in the ninth with Brad Lidge, fittingly, coming in to get the final batter. Lidge threw one pitch in the game, and he got Lance Berkman to ground out to Ryan Howard, who took it to the bag himself, for the out that sent the Phillies to the postseason for the third straight season. The fans were into this game too. It was the 69th sellout this season at Citizen’s Bank Park, the 38th straight, and the fans certainly got their money’s worth….especially the ones that stayed around for the post-game celebrations. The 45,207 fans in attendance tonight saw history. The last time the Phillies won their division title three straight years was over thirty years ago when the 1976-78 bunch did it. It was certainly a magical night, and hopefully this Phillies bunch can re-create that same magic in the postseason that the ’08 version produced to win another World Series.
