Spring Training Update  | read this item

So far, so good for the Phillies. It seems that the two-time defending National League Champions are having a very solid spring a little less than the halfway point into the Grapefruit League Schedule. It’s hard to believe that we are only a mere three weeks away from opening day for the Phillies when they will play the Washington Nationals in Washington, D.C. The Phils are getting exactly what any team could want right now out of spring training. They have gotten the young players invited to camp plenty of work to showcase their talents, and the veterans are getting their work in to get ready for the season as well. There are also a couple battles going on in camp, which is always fun to see. Kyle Kendrick and Jamie Moyer are battling it out for the final spot in the rotation, and the Phillies are still figuring out what their bullpen will look like come April 5th.

Through 11 Grapefruit League Games, the Phillies are 6-4-1. Now, we all know that Spring Training records don’t mean much, but nonetheless, it’s still nice to be on the winning side of things because it could breed more winning as the season begins. And, we all know that April’s have been tough months for the Phillies to start the season, but maybe, just maybe, if they have a solid Spring Training record, that could mean a solid April as well. In terms of Spring Training Statistics, the hitting stats don’t mean much, but the pitching stats frequently help determine who makes the team and who does not. It also can determine that fifth starter spot. Right now Kyle Kendrick is giving veteran Jamie Moyer a run for his money, as Kendrick is the leader in the clubhouse with nine innings pitched of scoreless baseball. Moyer has been successful thus far too with six scoreless innings pitched, but those were all in “B Games” this spring, whereas Kendrick’s three games have all been in the Grapefruit League. It will be interesting to see who wins this battle, veteran vs. youngster. I’ll continue to keep you posted throughout the spring. Also, coming up soon, make sure to check back for photos from Spring Training, and exclusive stories from when I went down to Clearwater, FL earlier this month.
