The American League East may be the toughest division in all of sports. It features two of Baseball’s biggest markets, one of the smartest organizations in the game, and yet another one that is clearly on the rise. With Major League Baseball in the midst of the statistical analysis age, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to find an advantage. The margin for error is getting smaller. But, for a team like the Baltimore Orioles, finding a new way is the only way they can even hope to compete.

There is no real way to compete with the Yankees when it comes to comparing checkbooks. The New York Yankees can make mistakes and simply pay to fix them. The Boston Red Sox are in a similar situation. While their payroll doesn’t get nearly the attention of the Yankees, the Red Sox can spend with the best of them. The Tampa Rays can’t spend, but they have stocked their organization so well that they seem to be self sustaining as a small market pennant contender. The Toronto Blue Jays are trying to find the mix between the three organizations as they aren’t exactly small market, but they have a General Manager who has started to really stock the organization quite well. That leaves the Orioles trying to find a way to compete in Baseball’s toughest division.

They have failed miserably since 1997, their last winning season. The Orioles have tried to spend money, but they simply haven’t attracted premium talent. Their farm system was severely neglected for over a decade before beginning to produce some talent such as Nick Markakis and Matt Weiters. Three years ago, the Orioles were excited about their young pitching that was being developed. Because the organization was so thin with pitching, they rushed Jake Arrieta, Brian Matusz, Zach Britton, and Chris Tillman. While talented, the group was so unprepared that each has either been hurt or returned to the Minor Leagues multiple times. And, most importantly, they have been beaten up in the American League East.

Supply and demand is the most basic of all economic concepts. If there is a shortage of a product, the demand for it will be higher. People will have a greater desire for it. If it’s a product that anyone can acquire with ease, the demand will not be as high. I equate this concept to fantasy baseball, especially the Going 9 NL Only league.

One of the most difficult aspects in analyzing baseball, whether it is for fantasy or real world purposes, is knowing when a slow start is really more than just a temporary issue. Some players are notoriously slow starters.
