New York— New York Yankees manager Jo e Girardi will again host a fundraiser for a cause near and dear to his heart – Alzheimer's research. The second annual “Remember When, Remember Now” Gala, a benefit for Girardi’s Catch 25 Foundation to assist Alzheimer’s research, will be held at the Grand Central Oyster Bar on Monday night, June 15, in New York City. The Yankees skipper will be joined by David Cone, the former Yankees and Mets pitcher now an analyst on Y ES Network, who will receive the Jerry Girardi Award Photo by Tom Berg 718-347-9140  | read this item

When Joe Torre, who had won four World Series and had led the Yankees to he playoffs in each of his 12 years at the helm, completed his contract in 2007, it seemed that his retention as manager was a formality. But a media conference call that most expected to be an announcement of a renewal instead became one of his ouster.

Whether it dulled the shock for fans or not, plans were already in place for the ascension of Joe Girardi, who had previously managed in Florida, to the Yankee throne — or, as Kevin Kernan puts it, “along the rail.” That refers to the spot along the dugout rail, but the image of a “third rail” is inescapable in the Bronx.

Kernan’s new book Girardi: Passion in Pinstripes (Triumph Books, 256 pps), is one part collection of testimonials and one part lauding of his skills as a manager and high level of class as a human being.

There’s almost a too-good-to-be-true feel as regards Girardi, which rises consistently through Kernan’s work. The book is more a collection of essays than true biography, with themes for each chapter discussing aspects of the Illinois native’s life, rather than a straight chronology. The best parts are the statements on his behalf from respected figures like Torre — over whom the Yanks chose Girardi after the 2007 season — and other friends in the game.

If there doesn’t seem to be anyone saying a bad word, it’s likely that Kernan couldn’t find that person. Girardi is liked and respected throughout the game, and his dedication to family, faith and his work serve as a foundation for that near universal assessment.

Girardi may be seen by many — including Yankees beat writers — as aloof and lacking in personality. But Kernan reiterates that mostly what they are seeing is Girardi’s drive to succeed, and that moments like post-game tosses to his kids are better signals of his true being.

Girardi may have done his best partial-season job to date this year, finding just the right mix of pitchers in the absence of his top two relievers and a counted-on starter and still leading his team to the best record in the American League, through yesterday’s games.
